Businesses in California's wine capital on Monday mopped up thousands of dollars in high-end vintages, swept glass from ghostly downtown streets ordinarily bustling with tourists and rushed to reopen in advance of the summer's last holiday weekend, following a severe earthquake that damaged wineries, historic buildings and hotels. With the dust still settling from Sunday's magnitude-6.0 temblor centered near the city of Napa, government and tourism officials assessing its economic and structural impact encouraged visitors to keep flocking to the charming towns, tasting rooms, restaurants and spas that drive the Napa Valley economy. While cleanup will take time and broken water mains remained a problem, they said, the worst damage and disruption was confined to the city's downtown, where ...

The theme was inclusion and advancing opportunities for women in business. But in her opening remarks, she spoke more about politics and her one-time foe, Donald Trump, although she never mentioned him by name. Referencing his inaugural address, she said, “Where some see a dark vision of carnage I see a light shining on creativity and opportunity.” She also noted last week’s defeat of the Republican health care bill, saying “when this disastrous bill failed, it was a victory for all Americans.” But she cautioned, “the other side never quits. Sooner or later, they’ll try again. We will have to fight back twice as hard. Not for the sake of politics, but because these are bad policies that will hurt people and take our country in the wrong direction.”

While cleanup will take time and broken water mains remained a problem, they said, the worst damage and disruption was confined to the city's downtown, where a post office, library and a 141-room hotel were among 150 homes and buildings deemed unsafe to occupy. The strongest earthquake to hit the San Francisco Bay Area in a quarter-century also caused several injuries, triggered fires that destroyed or damaged six mobile homes, and ruptured gas lines. In Napa Valley, two hotels and 12 wineries were still closed Monday, as well as many of the businesses downtown, he said. Local officials have an early working estimate that Napa Valley suffered $1 billion in property damage, but they hope the long-term economic impact of the quake to businesses will be modest, Napa County Supervisor Bill Dodd said. He said 80 percent of the valley's 500 or so wineries were unaffected. If people "think Napa is devastated, it's anything but devastated. We're only 24 hours out from an earthquake, and we're on our way back," Dodd said. CoreLogic Eqecat, which models economic losses from disasters, estimates that insured losses from the earthquake could range from $500 million to $1 billion. Vineyards have already started to harvest their grapes, crush them and store the juice. If the earthquake had happened before the harvest, Eqecat notes, the losses would have been lower. The wine business and associated tourist crowds represent a bulk of Napa County's economy. Visit Napa Valley estimates that 3 million tourists spend $1.4 billion a year within the county. The Napa Valley Vintners trade association says the industry generates more than $13 billion of economic activity each year, including 46,000 local jobs. When Glen and Gerry bought property in Northern California, they wanted first to live on the land to determine the best place to site their home. They found a company that makes tent cabins and erected three. They're not of the camping variety, but more semi-permanent fabric shelters sold by Sweetwater Bungalows. The living/dining room tent was an A La Carte option where they paid $5200 for a DIY setup: this includes the shell and rain fly and eave and awning system. The couple had to find their own lumber for framing the 14 by 20 foot room. They cut holes in the fabric to fit french doors and the salvaged windows they'd found. The bedroom and guest bedroom tents are smaller (12 x 14), but large enough to fit standard beds and completely floored with plywood. These kits come complete with frame, windows and door pricing at $6100, not including the platforms which the customer builds themselves with plans supplied by Sweetwater Bungalows. The couple converted an old shed (left on the property by the previous owner) into a plywood clad bathroom, complete with composting toilet. The showers are outdoors on the decks. For the kitchen, they constructed an open air lean-to outfitted with propane refrigerator, gas barbecue (with one burner and stove) and a corrugated metal roof. The space was built to be temporary, but several years have gone by and they've yet to break ground on their home (though they've seen fruit from the olive trees they personally planted and now have a line of organic olive oil).
